Port Forum in Brief

China and the 10 ASEAN member states are dedicated to the construction of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), and transportation is among the 10 priority cooperation fields confirmed by both sides. Since China and ASEAN jointly initiated the construction of CAFTA in 2002, the bilateral trade volume has been increased by 30% each year. Last year, among the $160.8 billion of trade volume between China and ASEAN, $100 billion was achieved by marine transport.

It has been a common expectation and active demand for China and ASEAN member states to strengthen the reciprocal cooperation for the regional and sub-regional ports, integrate the resources and improve the overall service capability. Presently the Pan-Beibu Gulf sees more and more cooperation and the strategic proposal of “One Axis and Two Wings” is widely acknowledged. To challenge the historic opportunity for port development within the region, the Ministry of Communications of China will host the China-ASEAN Port Development &Cooperation Forum on October 28-29, 2007. The Forum would surely provide a win-win platform for port development in both China and ASEAN countries, and create a unique opportunity for international port enterprises.
